Covering Codes for Hats-on-a-line
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider a popular game puzzle, called Hats-on-a-line, wherein a warden has n prisoners, each one wearing a randomly assigned black or white hat, stand in a line. Thus each prisoner can see the colors of all hats before him, but not his or of those behind him. Everyone can hear the answer called out by each prisoner. Based on this information and without any further communication, each prisoner has to call out his hat color starting from the back of the line. If he gets it right, he is released from the prison, otherwise he remains incarcerated forever. The goal of the team is to devise a strategy that maximizes the number of correct answers. A variation of this problem asks for the solution for an arbitrary number of colors. In this paper, we study the standard Hats-on-a-line problem and its natural extensions. We demonstrate an optimal strategy when the seeing radius and/or the hearing radius are limited. We show for certain orderings that arise from a (simulated) game between the warden and prisoners, how this problem relates to the theory of covering codes. Our investigations lead to two optimization problems related to covering codes in which one leads to an exact solution (for binary codes). For instance, we show that for 0 < k < n, (n − k − d) ≤ αmn where d = t(n − k,mk,m) is the minimum covering radius of an m-ary code of length (n − k) and size mk and αm = log m log(m2 − m + 1) . ∗Both ATC and TRDDC are research units of Tata Consultancy Services Limited. the electronic journal of combinatorics 13 (2006), #R21 1

On Hats and other Covers
We study a game puzzle that has enjoyed recent popularity among mathematicians, computer scientist, coding theorists and even the mass press. In the game, n players are fitted with randomly assigned colored hats. Individual players can see their teammates’ hat colors, but not their own. Based on this information, and without any further communication, each player must attempt to guess his hat c...

To investigate the impact of overexpression of AtNRT2.1 transgene from Arabidopsis on nitrate uptake rate and to understand the regulation of endogenous HATS by nitrate and glutamine amino acid (Gln) in tobacco plants, wild-type and transgenic (F line) plants grown on soil for 4 weeks were transferred to hydroponic culture in a controlled-environment with a 16/8h L:D photoperiod at 24? C/20...
متن کاملA note on marking lines in [k] n - In honor of Rick Wilson's 65th birthday
In [k] = [k]×[k]× · · · ×[k], a coordinate line consists of the collection of points where all but one coordinate is fixed and the unfixed coordinate varies over all possibilities. We consider the problem of marking (or designating) one point on each line in [k] so that each point in [k] is marked either a or b times, for some fixed a or b. This is equivalent to forming a strategy for a hat gue...
متن کاملThe Hat Game and covering codes
The Hat Game (Ebert’s Hat Problem) got much attention in the beginning of this century; not in the last place by its connections to coding theory and computer science. There were publications in The New York Times, Die Zeit and abcNews. Exact solutions with two colors are only known in the symmetric case (equal probabilities for the two colors) when = 2 − 1 (using Hamming codes), = 2 (extended ...
متن کاملRegulation of high-affinity nitrate uptake in roots of Arabidopsis depends predominantly on posttranscriptional control of the NRT2.1/NAR2.1 transport system.
In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), the NRT2.1 gene codes for the main component of the root nitrate (NO(3)(-)) high-affinity transport system (HATS). Due to the strong correlation generally found between high-affinity root NO(3)(-) influx and NRT2.1 mRNA level, it has been postulated that transcriptional regulation of NRT2.1 is a key mechanism for modulation of the HATS activity. However, t...
